In 1997, artist/organizer Mikuak Rai (then known as Matthew Payne) and Howard University DJ/producer Brent “Munch” Joseph began a collaboration to host a groundbreaking open-mic community experience they called THE MOVEMENT. The name honored the many movements for social justice, civil rights, and human rights that came before—and the cultural contributions of the artists, poets, musicians, educators, and organizers who shaped U Street, NW—“Black Broadway.”

From 1997 to 2010, THE MOVEMENT Sessions on Monday nights at Bar Nun (now Pure Lounge) became an anchor for a pulsing creative community of poets, writers, musicians, educators, entrepreneurs, and culture-bearers. It was a place where people came to share truth, sharpen craft, meet collaborators, and build something bigger than any one person—a living ecosystem of art and community during the turn of the millennium in the nation’s capital.

Like many urban centers, Washington, DC experienced a creative renaissance in the late ’90s and early 2000s—before social media and constant documentation. In that era, The Movement grew the old-fashioned way: personal outreach, handbills, and word-of-mouth. Thousands of people from across the DMV—and beyond—passed through that venue, carrying the energy forward into their lives and work.

The Movement Legacy Initiative (TMLI)

Preserving culture, memory, and creative lineage.

The Movement Legacy Initiative (TMLI) exists to bridge the gap between generations of artists, activists, organizers, and educators through exploration and intersections of the past, present, and future. We’re gathering the story of this era through community-driven research methods, interpersonal and digital outreach, and careful documentation—always in service to the people who created the culture.

TMLI is the umbrella guiding this intergenerational work, and The Movement Digital Archive Project (TMDAP) is the primary public-facing archive initiative within it. Through community knowledge surveys, personal narratives, oral history interviews, and Community Archiving Events, we’re building a shared record that honors the full spectrum of voices, perspectives, and experiences that shaped this time.

Because The Movement Sessions unfolded in a pre-digital era, much of its history lives in memory and in personal collections. If you performed, attended, brought a friend, found your voice, or witnessed something unforgettable at Bar Nun—or at the many other venues and gatherings of that period—we welcome what you remember. Photos, flyers, chapbooks, notebooks, recordings, cassette tapes, CDs, vinyl, videos, and first-hand reflections all help ensure this chapter of DC cultural history is preserved with care, accuracy, and community stewardship.

The Movement Digital Archive Project (TMDAP)

A community-informed, publicly accessible digital archive of our story.

The Movement Digital Archive Project (TMDAP) documents the cultural history and lasting influence of The Movement Sessions, a spoken word and arts gathering founded in 1997 that helped catalyze a broader creative ecosystem on U Street, NW during Black Broadway’s Platinum Era (1997–2010). This archive is designed to preserve not only what happened, but how it felt—through the voices and materials of the community that lived it.

TMDAP is being built through a Community Knowledge Survey, personal narratives, oral history interviews, and a series of Community Archiving Events. Together, these methods help collect artifacts, map the cultural landscape of the era, and ensure the history is remembered, interpreted, and stewarded by the community that created it.

All contributions are treated with care and respect. Rights remain with original creators, permission is requested before any public use, and contributors choose how they are credited (name, stage name, alias, or anonymously).

Community Archiving Events (CAE)

Gathering to share, remember, and record—for future generations.

Community Archiving Events (CAE) are welcoming gatherings designed to feel more like stepping into a creative lounge than an archiving process. An eclectic mix of neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop, funk, Black rock, and soul sets the tone while people reconnect, swap stories, and remember together.

You’re invited to bring flyers, photos, chapbooks, artwork, music, and/or simply your memories from The Movement Sessions era and U Street’s creative scene. There’s no pressure to perform or prepare anything ahead of time—come as you are, stay as long as you like, and engage in whatever way feels comfortable.

Inside the venue, there are a few easy ways to share. Flatbed and overhead scanners can digitize paper materials and books, and a photographer can document artwork or items that don’t scan well. There’s also an interview area for those who would like to reflect on their experiences using guiding questions—always on your terms.

The Movement was created outside of formal structures—by artists, organizers, and community members building something real, in real time. We are still coming out of pocket to make this work possible as we develop the initiative and secure the right support systems, including a fiscal sponsor.

Your support helps fund priority needs such as consultant fees (archival standards, metadata, finance, legal, and survey analysis), equipment for digitization, venues for Community Archiving Events, interns and outreach, and website upkeep. Our intention is to operate with ethical transparency and share clear visibility into project expenses as the support infrastructure is finalized.
